Whitworth Beats Corban 3-1 at Linfield Classic

McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- (From Kelly Bird, Linfield SID) Seniors Evan Hendricksonand Todd Sabrowski scored in the final six minutes as Whitworth defeated Corban 3-1 Monday to win the first Linfield Wildcat Classic.

Whitworth went 2-0 in the two-day, four-team event.

Hendricksonput Whitworth ahead of Corban 2-1 with a 20-yarder from the left side with 5:38 to play and Sabrowski scored on a 35-yard free kick up the middle with 3:13 left.

Whitworth junior midfielder Ali Seyedali was chosen Most Valuable Player of the Classic.

Corban (1-1-1), formerly Western Baptist, is a member of the NAIA Cascade Conference.

After 64 scoreless minutes, the teams traded nearly identical goals within 36 seconds.

Joshua Crain scored from six yards on an assist by Eric Branch for Corban and Niko Varlamos retaliated from six yards on an assist by Sabrowski for Whitworth.

Whitworth got off 29 shots to 13 for Corban, leading to 21 saves for Corban goalkeeper Brett Bentley. Whitworth’s Scott Barnum made 10.

In a scoreless first half, the two closest shots were by Whitworth, both in the final 4 minutes, both less than 10 yards from the goal, and both blocked. One was a left-footer by Chris Johnson and the other a header by Curtis Flournoy off a well-placed free kick by Hendrickson.

Freshman goalkeeper Barnum made a diving save for Whitworth in the third minute of the second half.

Named to the all-tournament team were Whitworth’s Seyedali, Sabrowski NikoVarlamos and Trevor Osborne Caleb Covier, Scott Marshall and Jim Young of Corban; Silverio Martinez and David Epstein of Redlands; and Jason Wong and Mike Grabast from Linfield.

Whitworth returns to Spokane to open its home season next weekend, playing the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Saturday and Simon Fraser University of British Columbia on Sunday at the Whitworth Men's Soccer Invitational. Both matches start at noon.

St. Thomas is 1-0 this season after defeating Buena Vista 3-0 on Saturday at home. The Tommies finished 11-5-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the MIAC in 2004 and return leading scorer Nick Radigan (11 goals, 5 assists), who earned honorable mention All-MIAC honors as a freshman last fall. Whitworth and UST have never met in men's soccer.

Simon Fraser is 4-0 so far this season and is ranked 13th in the NAIA preseason poll. The Clan defeated Concordia (Portland) 2-1 in overtime last Wednesday when Andrew Corazza scored a pair of goals to tie for the all-time points lead in SFU history (138). The Clan will host Calgary on Thursday before traveling to Spokane for the weekend.

Pacific Lutheran University will also participate in the tournament, taking on SFU on Saturday and UST on Sunday. Both matches will begin at 2:30 pm.
