THOUSAND Oaks, Calif. -- Whitworth came back from an early one-goal deficit to claim a season opening 2-1 win in men's soccer at California Lutheran on Tuesday afternoon. The fourth-ranked Pirates scored one goal in each half for the come-from-behind victory. Click here for complete box score.
Following a scramble off of a corner kick, Dany Ishak gave CLU a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute. Blake Bernhard and Josh Moskowitz were both credited with assists. It looked like the Pirates would tie the match a few minutes later, but Kingsman goalkeeper Chris Thompson made a diving stop on a penalty kick attempt by the Pirates' Niko Varlamos. Whitworth did tie the match in the 23rd minute when Skye Henderson played a ball from the far left side into the box, where Chris Johnson scored from 10 yards. The winning goal came in the 59th minute. After it appeared that CLU had cleared a Pirate corner kick, the ball was played back wide of the Kingsmen goal, where Curtis Flournoy gathered the ball and slotted a diagonal pass to Adam Loeffler, who scored on the back side from five yards. Kevin Bostock recovered from the early score to make eight saves in goal for the Pirates. Thompson finished with five saves for CLU. Whitworth will return to action tomorrow afternoon at Redlands in a meeting of ranked opponents. In the latest D3kicks.com poll (Sept. 5), Whitworth is ranked 4th, while Redlands is ranked 21st.
