SPOKANE, Wash. -- Skye Henderson's goal just over a minute into overtime lifted Whitworth to a 1-0 win over visiting Linfield in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Henderson's goal capped a close contest in which the Pirates only outshot the Wildcats 20-17 and each team's keeper made great saves during the game. Linfield's Grant Williams made the first big save, diving far to his right to stop a headed shot by Whitworth's Matt Friesen only four minutes into the match. But Pirate goalkeeper Kevin Bostock made the match-turning play when he dove to his left to block a penalty kick by Wildcat forward Mike Grabast six minutes into the second half. At that point the Pirates began to exert control, outshooting Linfield 12-4 over the rest of the way. Williams made another huge save when he came out to stop a shot by Whitworth's Chris Johnson, who was running clear of the Linfield defense. Later in the half Henderson had an open attempt, but Linfield's Nick Jauregui cleared the ball off of the line for a team save. The game winner came after Curtis Flournoy lofted a pass to a wide open Henderson at the top of the box. Henderson took one dribble before firing to the lower left corner past Williams. Williams finished with six saves in goal for the Wildcats, while Bostock had four saves for his second shutout of the weekend. Whitworth (9-3-3 overall,
8-1-2 NWC), aiming for its third consecutive NWC title, moves
three points ahead of idle Puget Sound (7-1-2) in the conference
standings. Linfield fell to 7-6-2, 4-5-2. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
