SPOKANE, Wash. -- (From Blake Timm, Pacific SID) After being stunned by Pacific back in September, Whitworth paid revenge back to the Boxers in a big way by pinning a 4-0 loss on the Boxers Saturday in Northwest Conference soccer action at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates (8-3-3, 7-1-2 NWC) remained three points behind league-leading Puget Sound in the conference standings by scoring all four goals in the first half. The Pirates also ran their unbeaten streak to five games. Pacific (8-4-1, 5-4-1 NWC) found themselves shutout for only the third time this season. They slipped into fifth place in the NWC standings behind third place Pacific Lutheran, who beat George Fox 3-2 in overtime Saturday, and fourth place Linfield, who beat Whitman 1-0. Matt Friesen first put Whitworth on the board in the 19th minute, knocking in a low laser from just inside the 18-yard box off touches from Chris Johnson and Kenshiro Uki. Freisen added an assist to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead, crossing a pass to Niko Varlamos who used a slow roller to score from close range. Varlamos continued the score then assist system six minutes later when he sent a ball to Curtis Flournoy, who deeked around a Pacific defender and connected in the 32nd minute. Ryan Powers added the fourth goal of the half in the 41st minute, taking a long pass from Ali Seyedali and moving around a Pacific defender to secure the final score. Both teams had ample chances to score as Whitworth outshot Pacific by a 21-14 margin. The Pirates, however, allowed the Boxers only one shot on goal. Freisen, Powers and Skye Henderson each had four shots for the Pirates. Pacific goalkeeper Jory Shene made four saves on the afternoon, while Whitworth's Kevin Bostock stopped one in the victory. The Pirates will host Linfield on Sunday
afternoon at 2:30 pm, looking to move back into a tie for first
place in the NWC standings with UPS. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
