SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth used a pair of second half goals to pull away from visiting Pacific Lutheran 2-0 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Curtis Flournoy tallied his first goal of the season on an assist from Brent Murakami at 55:01 to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead ten minutes into the second half. With just under ten minutes remaining, Ali Seyedali lofted a corner kick to a wide open Matt Friesen on the far side of the keeper box, and Friesen fired a hard shot over the top of PLU keeper Andrew Croft for the final goal of the game. It was also Friesen's first goal of the season. The Lutes had a good chance to tie the match in the 75th minute, but Pirate keeper Kevin Bostock made his only save of the match when he knocked Baard Asker's shot over the bar. Whitworth outshot PLU 15-5 and had a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. Bostock stopped the only on-goal shot he faced. The Lutes' Andrew Croft made a pair of saves. The Pirates improved to 4-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the NWC, attempting to win their third straight NWC title. They will host Puget Sound (6-0, 3-0) on Sunday. The Loggers defeated Whitman 1-0 on Saturday. PLU heads to Whitman to take on the Missionaries. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
