SPOKANE, Wash. -- Neither Whitworth or visiting Puget Sound could post a goal on Sunday afternoon, leading to a 0-0 draw between the teams in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match.
The 8th-ranked Loggers suffered the first blemish on their perfect record in 2006 and are now 6-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the NWC. The defending conference champion Pirates tied for the third time this season and the second time in conference play and is now 4-3-3 and 3-1-2. Both goal keepers made key stops to preserve the tie. UPS had two good chances to score turned back by Whitworth keeper Kevin Bostock in the final 30 minutes. Jeremy Denman's shot from a hard right side angle was caught by Bostock with just over 22 minutes to play. With a little less than three minutes to go, Jason Sisneros fired a shot that Bostock dove to deflect away from the goal. The Loggers' Pete Van Sant was just as solid. With nine minutes left Whitworth's Ali Seyedali had a free kick from five yards outside the box. The angling shot got over the goal and was headed for the upper left corner before Van Sant got a hand on the ball to knock it over the bar. In the first overtime Curtis Flournoy took a feed from Pirate teammate Chris Johnson and got behind the Logger defense, but he could not get enough on his point blank effort to get it past Van Sant. Whitworth finished with a slight edge in both shots (13-11) and shots on goal (5-4). UPS had a slight advantage in corner kicks (5-4). Van Sant finished with five saves, while Bostock totaled four. Whitworth remained undefeated at home in its last 19 (16-0-3) NWC matches. The Pirates last home loss to a conference opponent was a 1-0 decision in overtime to UPS in 2003. Whitworth will return to action next Saturday
at Whitman College in Walla Walla. The match will start at 6:30
pm. UPS will host both George Fox and Pacific next weekend. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
