SPOKANE, Wash. -- Sean Lambrecht scored in the 84th minute to lift Whitworth to a season-ending 1-0 win over visiting Whitman in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth soccer field. Paired with PLU's 1-0 loss at Linfield, the win gives the Pirates sole possession of second place in the final 2006 NWC standings.
Whitworth finishes the season with a record of 10-5-3 overall and 9-3-2 in the NWC. The Missionaries close the season with records of 5-8-2, 4-8-2. The teams battled back and forth throughout the match. The Pirates outshot the Missionaries 10-7 in the first half, but Whitman had a 15-11 edge in shots in the second half. Whitworth had a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Lambrecht nearly tallied the match's first goal with just over 20 minutes left when his shot from the left side caught Whitman keeper Brett Axelrod out of position, but defender Craig Yuen flew into the goal mouth and kicked the shot away at the last instant. Axelrod finished with four saves for Whitman, while Whitworth keeper Kevin Bostock concluded his stellar career at Whitworth with his 20th career shutout while making three saves. Nine Whitworth seniors, including Bostock and Lambrecht, were recognized prior to the match for playing in their final match as a Pirate.
