NEWBERG, Ore.- Whitworth University earned its sixth win in a row, and fifth shutout victory in a row, with a 2-0 decision at George Fox University in a Northwest Conference men's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (6-1-1 overall, 4-0 NWC) dominated play by outshooting the Bruins (3-6, 1-3) 19-5, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth had 10 corner kicks to none for George Fox. Ryan Powers tallied his third goal of the season when he gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. Brent Zahn picked up the first of his two assists on the day and Skye Henderson was also credited with an assist on the play. Matt Friesen scored the game-clinching goal in the 69th minute, his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Zahn and Keith Kirsch each had assists on the play. Whitworth keeper Scott Barnum only had to make one save to earn his sixth shutout of the season. Coming up: Whitworth will travel again next weekend, heading to Tacoma to take on Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday and defending NWC champion University of Puget Sound on Sunday.
