The win was the first of the season for the Pirates (1-1-1) after a pair of tough results in the season-opening trip to Texas. The loss was the first of the season for the Clan (4-1-1). Whitworth head coach Sean Bushey earned his first career win over the traditional NAIA powerhouse from Burnaby, B.C.

Whitworth took control of the closely contested match in overtime, forcing a save by SFU keeper Thomas Lindley 21 seconds into the period. The ball was still deep in the Clan end when Whitworth defender Ben Dixon (Sr., D, Missoula, Mont.) intercepted a clearing attempt and headed a high ball deep into the SFU box. Henderson (Sr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) beat his defender to the ball and headed his shot over Lindley for the match-winner.

The Pirates went ahead 1-0 in the first half when Keith Kirsch (Jr., MF, Colbert, Wash.) started a breakaway down the left side. He pass to Kenshiro Uki (Sr., MF, Aiea, Hawaii) toward the middle of the box was touched on to a wide-open Ryan Powers (Sr., MF, Newberg, Ore.), who scored in the 26th minute.

SFU tied the match early in the second period when Scott McEachern slotted a pass through the middle of the box to Michael Beck, whose shot beat Whitworth keeper Scott Barnum to the lower left corner of the goal.

Powers had a good chance to win the match in regulation for the Bucs. In the 74th minute Elly Bulega (So., F, Tacoma, Wash.) hustled to steal the ball from Lindley outside the SFU box and the ball went to Powers wide open in the middle of the field. But his shot was blocked out of the goal mouth at the last instant by Luca Bellisomo, keeping the Clan tied.

Whitworth finished with a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Lindley made three saves, while Barnum made a pair of stops.

Both Pirate goals were the first of the season for the respective scorers.

SFU will continue an Eastern Washington swing at Whitman College in Walla Walla on Saturday. Whitworth will travel to take on Cal Lutheran University in a neutral site match in Tacoma on Sunday afternoon.
