SAN ANTONIO - Twelfth-ranked Trinity earned a measure of revenge with a season-opening 2-1 win over Whitworth in a non-conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.
The match was a make-up of Friday night's scheduled contest, which was postponed due to heavy rain and lighting. Whitworth trailed 2-0 before Matt Friesen scored to pull the Pirates within a goal with just under four minutes to play. Freshman Travis Gutierrez assisted on the play. Trinty took a 1-0 lead on Patrick Floeck's goal in the 27th minute. German Gomez added the second goal in the 63rd minute. The Tigers won the closest thing to a rematch of a 2005 contest between the squads that sent Whitworth to the NCAA Division III final four and ended Trinity's season. The Pirates won that match by an identical 2-1 score. The Tigers outshot the Bucs 16-7, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth, opening the season with six new starters, will look for its first win on Sunday when the Bucs take on Southwestern University. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
