Whitworth Beats Willamette for Fifth Straight Win

SALEM, Ore.- Whitworth University won 3-0 at Willamette University in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon, improving the Pirates' winning streak to five in a row.

Whitworth (5-1-1 overall, 3-0 NWC) controlled the match by outshooting the Bearcats (2-4-1, 0-3) 18-9, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.

Keith Kirsch led the Pirate attack with a goal and an assist. He assisted on the first goal when he took a corner kick by Matt Friesen and passed to Ben Rotert, who headed the ball past Willamette keeper Scott Klein in the 8th minute.

Kirsch scored in the 60th minute when he beat Klein from five yards to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Ryan Powers was credited with the assist.

Friesen scored the Pirates' final goal in the 74th minute, getting assists from both Brent Zahn and Mickey Webb.

Scott Barnum earned his fourth consecutive shutout by making four saves in goal for Whitworth. Klein made five saves for the Bearcats.

Whitworth will hope to continue the winning streak at George Fox University on Sunday afternoon. GFU fell 1-0 at home to Whitman College on Saturday.
