Whitworth Shuts Out Willamette 2-0

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University set up a first place showdown for next weekend by completing a sweep this weekend after dropping Willamette University 2-0 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

The Pirates are 12-2-1 overall and 10-1 in the NWC, five points ahead of second place Puget Sound (8-1-1 in the NWC). Whitworth will host UPS next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a match that could determine the final chase for the NWC title.

The Bearcats fell to 2-12-2, 0-10-1.

Skye Henderson gave Whitworth a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute with his fourth goal of the season. Keith Kirsch passed across to Ryan Powers, who directed the ball back in front of the net to Henderson who finished to the bottom left corner. Both Kirsch and Powers earned assists on the play.

John Prugh scored the insurance goal in the 51st minute, his second of the season. Brent Zahn sent a pass across the box, that Kirsch helped along to Prugh, who beat Willamette keeper Scott Klein to the lower corner of the net.

Whitworth kept the pressure on throughout the match, outshooting the Bearcats 30-6, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
