SPOKANE, Wash.- Trailing at half time for only the second time this season, Whitworth University came back for a 2-1 overtime victory over visiting Whitman College in a Northwest Conference men's soccer on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Ben Dixon (Sr., D, Missoula, Mont.) converted a corner kick by Matt Friesen (Sr., F, Newberg, Ore.) into the match-winning shot early in the 93rd minute to give the Pirates (8-2-1 overall, 6-1 NWC) the victory. The Missionaries fell to 6-6, 3-4.

Stephen Phillips took a pass from Greg Phillips on the left side of the box and beat Whitworth keeper Scott Barnum (So., Fall City, Wash.) to the left side of the goal in the 13th minute to give Whitman an early 1-0 lead.

The Pirates had not trailed at halftime since a season-opening 2-1 loss at Trinity (Texas), but Friesen converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute to pull Whitworth into a 1-1 tie.

Brett Axelrod made five saves for the Missionaries as Whitworth outshot Whitman 22-7, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goals. Barnum made two saves for the Bucs.

Whitworth and Whitman will hit the road next weekend to take on Linfield College and Pacific University.
