Complete box score and play by play SPOKANE, Wash. - A goal less than two minutes into the match lifted visiting Willamette University to a 1-0 win over Whitworth College in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field. Susan Butler's short shot from the right side came at 1:38, and would end up being the only goal the Bearcats (9-4-1 overall, 7-2-1 NWC) would need. Emily Gross set up Butler's fifth goal of the season, flipping the ball out to Butler from the middle of the goal box. Whitworth (5-5-3, 4-4-2) had plenty of chances to tie the match, but could not convert opportunities. The Pirates outshot the Bearcats 11-6 and had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Goal keeper Kari Woody made three saves for Willamette, while Jenn Miller made two stops in goal for the Pirates. Willamette's win avenged an earlier 2-0 loss to Whitworth in Salem, Oregon. It is the second year in a row Whitworth and Willamette have won on the other team's home field. The Pirates return to action next Saturday and Sunday when they play at Linfield College on Saturday and Pacific University on Sunday. Both matches start at noon. The Bearcats' next match is also next Saturday when they host Lewis & Clark College. Go to Athletics Home Page > Women's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
