FOREST GROVE , Ore. -- (From Pacific SID Office) Visiting Whitworth College broke open a close match in the second half Sunday, scoring three goals in the final 45 minutes to beat Pacific University, 4-1, in Northwest Conference women's soccer action at Tom Reynolds Field.

Whitney Ramsey struck twice for the Pirates

After escaping the first half with a 1-0 lead, the Pirates (6-6-3, 5-5-2 NWC) ignited to outshoot Pacific 10-4 in the half and score three times behind Whitney Ramsey's first two goals of the season. Whitworth outshot the Boxers (6-9-1, 3-8-1 NWC) 18-9 for the game and held an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Ashley Fisk opened scoring for the Pirates in the 12th minute, coming out of a scrum in front of the goal to chip the ball past the left side of Pacific goalie Shannon Tillman. Ashley Troxel, who sent the ball into the scrum, earned the assist.

Both defenses hunkered down until Ramsey struck in the 58th minute, connecting off of Penelope Crowe's right side corner kick. Greta Thibodeau made it 3-0 Pirates in the 62nd minute, heading in a Ramsey cross from five yards out.

Lynne Guenther put Pacific on the board in the 71st minute, placing her header into the middle of the net off of Kaleigh Stubblefield's 25-yard free kick. Ramsey added punctuation for the Pirates, however, in the 80th minute when she pulled Tillman out of position and chipped the ball in to the right side.

Tillman made seven saves in the loss, while Whitworth starter Jenn Miller made four saves in 82 minutes of action.

This afternoon's match was the home finale for the Boxers, who will play their final four matches on the road beginning with a Wednesday night match-up at Lewis & Clark. Whitworth returns home to host Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran next weekend.
