Whitworth Nets First Win, Tops NNU
September 10 , 2005

SPOKANE, Wash. --Whitworth College tallied its first victory of 2005 as the Pirates defeated visiting Northwest Nazarene University 2-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match on Saturday morning at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Ashley Fisk scored both goals to lead the Pirates, who improved to 1-1-1. The Crusaders fell to 2-4.

Fisk scored the first goal at 24:22, taking a crossing pass from Marissa Williams and beating NNU keeper Amanda Merrell to the right side of the net.

Fisk made it 2-0 at 56:35 in the second half when she lofted a high shot from just outside the keeper box. Merrell could only get a couple fingers on the ball, but could not prevent the goal.

The final score matched the stats as Whitworth controlled the play. The Pirates outshot the Crusaders 15-4, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. Merrell made four saves. Whitworth keeper Jenn Miller stopped one shot.

NNU returns to action next Friday when the Crusaders host Seattle Pacific in the GNAC opener for both teams.

Whitworth opens Northwest Conference play next weekend at Willamette on Saturday and George Fox on Sunday. Whitworth split with Willamette last season, defeating the Bearcats in Salem, but losing in Spokane. The Pirates also split with GFU, winning in Spokane but losing to the Bruins in Newberg, Oregon. Both matches will begin at noon and will be played as part of men's/women's conference doubleheaders.
