Complete box score and play by play SPOKANE, Wash. - Chelsey Stoltz scored only eight minutes into the second half and Linfield goal keeper Allison Cartmill made three key saves to preserve the lead as the visiting Wildcats defeated 21st-ranked Whitworth College 2-1 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
Stoltz put in a ball crossed by Kate Franklin at 53:45 to put Linfield (2-4-1 overall, 1-3 NWC) in front for the first time in the match and for good. Cartmill subsequently stopped three point blank shots to preserve the win. Ten minutes after the goal was scored, Cartmill came out to stop a breakaway by Whitworth's Kara Tisthammer. Six minutes later Cartmill made a point-blank save against Ashley Fisk. Marissa Williams redirected a cross from only five yards out at 80:36, but Cartmill made her final key save. Both of the first half goals came on corner kicks. Meghan Hudson headed in Marissa Williams' corner kick only 5:54 into the match, giving Whitworth (3-2-2, 2-1-1) an early lead. Linfield answered when Nellie Reuland's corner kick forced Pirate keeper Jenn Miller to make a save, and the ball bounced to Ashley Covey, who scored the put back. Whitworth outshot Linfield 19-7, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Pirates also had an 11-4 edge in corner kicks. Linfield's last victory over Whitworth, and the Wildcats' last win in Spokane, occurred in October of 2002 when they came away with a 3-0 win over the Pirates. Whitworth returns to action next weekend when the Pirates head to Tacoma to take on first place Puget Sound on Saturday and Pacific Lutheran on Sunday. Linfield will travel to Lewis & Clark for a Wednesday night contest with the Pioneers. Go to Athletics Home Page > Women's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
