SPOKANE, Wash. -- California got the better of Washington on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth College Women's Soccer Invitational when Cal State - East Bay nipped host Whitworth 1-0 in overtime and Chapman University came from behind to defeat Whitman College 3-2. CSUEB improved to 1-0-1 in 2005 when Tonya Allen took a throw in from Renae Dudek deep on right half of the Whitworth field, beat a defender and fired the ball past Pirate goalkeeper Jenn Miller into left side of the Pirate net with only 33 seconds left in the first overtime period. The Pioneers managed to pull out the victory despite getting out shot 24-14 by Whitworth. Miller made four saves for the Pirates, while Koree Palmer came off of the bench to make four stops for CSUEB. Whitworth (0-1) had to play most of the match without two-time First Team All-Northwest Conference forward Jael Hagerott, who left with a knee injury 20 minutes into the game. Her status for Sunday's contest is uncertain. In Saturday's second contest, Chapman came from behind twice to defeat Whitman 3-2, scoring all three goals in the second period. Shari Lambert scored the match-winning goal on a breakaway, taking a lead pass from Katherine Furman and beating Missionary keeper Anne Owen to the lower left corner with 8:13 left to play in the contest. Whitman (0-1) scored the only goal of the first half when Sammie Arthur took a pass from Emily Marshall and scored from near the top of the keeper box at 22:56. Chapman (1-0) tied the match only 2:32 into the second half when Lindsey Lewis scored from nearly the same spot Arthur scored the Missionary goal. Furman had the first of her two assists on the play. Whitman went back in front at 53:38 when Marshall passed ahead to Kristen Berndt, forcing the keeper to come out and defend. Berndt scored over the top of Panther keeper Jaclyn Burris. Chapman tied the match once again just over three minutes later when Nicolette Dolas headed in a corner kick from Breanne Crowley at 56:59. The match was evenly played with Chapman out shooting Whitman 14-10. However, Whitman had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The four teams will complete the invitational's schedule on Sunday when Whitman plays Cal State East Bay at 11:00 am, followed by Chapman-Whitworth at 1:30 pm.
