SPOKANE, Wash. -- Jael Hagerott drew a penalty kick foul in the Pacific Lutheran box with 2:35 to play in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match and converted the attempt to lift Whitworth to a 2-1 win over the visiting Lutes on Saturday afternoon a the Whitworth soccer field.
Hagerott's goal capped a dramatic comeback by the Pirates, who scored both of their goals in the final nine minutes to improve to 6-1-1 overall and 4-1 in the NWC. PLU fell to 6-3 and 3-2. The Lutes took a 1-0 lead early in the second half when Breann Vanden Bos corralled Jackie Oehmcke's corner kick near the top of the box and beat Pirate goal keeper Leah Motz at 48:55. The score remained the same until Greta Thibodeau broke free on the right side and crossed to Penelope Crowe for the tying goal in the 82nd minute. Hagerott's winning goal came six minutes later. It was Hagerott's second match winning goal in as many games. Whitworth outshot PLU 11-6, but the shots on goal were even at three each. Motz made a pair of saves for the Pirates, while Alyssa Blackburn made a single stop for PLU. Whitworth will host Puget Sound on Sunday, trying to remain a game behind NWC leading Willamette in the conference standings. PLU heads to Walla Walla to take on Whitman.
