TACOMA, Wash. -- (From Nick Dawson, PLU SID) Pacific Lutheran honored its five seniors at halftime of their final home match, and all of the PLU players celebrated at the end of the match as the Lutes defeated the Whitworth Pirates, 2-0, in a Northwest Conference women’s soccer match played Sunday at the PLU field. With the victory, PLU improves to 11-5-2, including an 8-4-2 mark in conference play. The defeat drops the Pirates to 11-4-2 for the season and 9-4-1 in the conference. Jackie Oehmcke scored against the run of play at 16:15 to put the Lutes ahead. Nicole Reinke sent a 30-yard pass over the back line to Oehmcke, who broke in behind the defense with a perfectly timed run. She blasted the ball past Whitworth goalkeeper Leah Motz and into the back of the net for her fifth goal this season. Pacific Lutheran defender Breann Vanden Bos scored the second goal at 60:48. Her lofted pass into the goalie box was caught by the wind and Motz was unable to get back to knock it away. The ball bounced once on the ground and then up into the top of the netting, giving Vanden Bos her second goal of the season. Up to that point, Whitworth had controlled most of the action as the Lutes had managed just those two shots. In the final 30 minutes, PLU was able to put additional pressure on Whitworth, forcing three saves from Motz. The Pirates had several good scoring chances of their own on eight shots, forcing PLU goalkeeper Alyssa Blackburn to make four saves in goal. Motz finished with three saves for the Pirates. Whitworth will conclude the season with a pair of home matches this week. The Pirates will host Lewis & Clark College on Thursday at Noon. On Saturday the Pirates will host Whitman at 11:00 and honor those seniors playing in their final home match. Go to Athletics Home Page > Women's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
