SPOKANE, Wash. -- Sammie Arthur scored in the second overtime and Kristen Berndt scored twice and assisted on the winner to lift visiting Whitman to a 4-3 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Confereence women's soccer match on Thursday afternoon.

The Missionaries improved to 7-5-4 overall to clinch a winning season, and 7-4-4 in the NWC. The Pirates (11-5-2, 9-5-1) dropped their third straight game.

Lindsey Oakes scored twice for the Bucs.

Corina Gabbert got Whitman on the board first when she headed in Kristen Mittelsteadt's corner kick in the 11th minute. But Whitworth's Jael Hagerott tied things up two minutes later when she dribbled around two defenders and fired a shot to the top left corner of the net.

The Missionaries grabbed a 2-1 lead when Betsy Neel sent a ball ahead to Berndt, who beat to Pirate defenders to the ball for a breakaway goal in the 17th minute.

The score remained 2-1 until Lindsey Oakes tied the match in the 67th minute when she intercepted a Whitman clear attempt off of a corner kick and shot the ball through traffic into the goal. Oakes then gave Whitworth its only lead when she took a pass from Penelope Crowe and fired a hard shot that bounced off of the cross bar, the right poll and Whitman keeper Courtney Porter before going into the net in the 75th minute.

But Berndt's game-tying goal came less than two minutes later. Neel had a free kick from 30 yards straight on that Whitworth keeper Leah Motz saved, but couldn't control. Berndt was right there to put the ball back in.

The winning goal came on a quick counter after Whitman stole a pass at midfield. Berndt passed up to Arthur, who turned and fired from near the top of the box, beating Motz to the upper left corner.

Whitman will conclude its season tomorrow when the Missionaries host Lewis & Clark College. L&C will then travel up to Spokane for the final match of the season for both the Pirates and the Pioneers. Kick off is at 11:00 am and Whitworth seniors Meghan Johnson, Katy Jones and Nicole Starkey will be recognized at halftime of the match.
