SPOKANE, Wash. -- Laura Uhlmansiek and Meghan Anderson each had a goal and assist to lift visiting Willamette to a 3-1 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon. The win kept the Bearcats (5-0-1 overall, 2-0 NWC) unbeaten, while the Pirates (3-1-1, 1-1 NWC) suffered their first loss of 2006.
Whitworth took a 1-0 lead when Greta Thibodeau's hard cross from the right side was mishandled by Bearcat keeper Kari Woody and then bounced off of a defender into the goal in the third minute of play. It was officially scored as an own-goal. Willamette tied the match at 16:48 when Uhlmansiek lofted a high free kick to the front of the goal, which was headed in by Rachel Janny. Five minutes later Uhlmansiek scored from the top of the box after getting a pass from Anderson to put the Bearcats on top. The final Willamette goal came late in the first half after a scramble for the ball in the Whitworth box. Emily Gross gathered possession and fed Anderson on the left side. Her shot cleanly beat Pirate keeper Leah Motz at 42:29. Neither team managed a goal in the second half. Whitworth and Willamette finished with 10 shots each, and the Pirates had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. But Woody made five saves, while Motz finished with two.
