Whitworth Knocks Off Fox to Remain Unbeaten
Sept. 23, 2007

NEWBERG, Ore. - Whitworth University overcame an own goal to knock off George Fox University 3-2 in an early season match up of teams with unbeaten league records in Northwest Conference women's soccer.

Ramsey's winner was her second of the weekend

The visiting Pirates continued to improve upon the best start in school history and are now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the NWC. The Bruins fell to 5-2, 3-1.

Kelly Baker gave 13th-ranked Whitworth the early lead in the 26th minute when she scored off of an assist by Lindsey Oakes. It was Baker's third goal of the season.

But then the Pirates allowed George Fox to tie the game by giving up an own goal in the 33rd minute. Whitworth would go right back in front 2-1 when Kara Tisthammer scored her third goal of the season in the 34th minute. Greta Thibodeau picked up the assist, the first of two she would get in the match.

Early in the second half, George Fox's Kirsten Cardwell got off the only shot on goal a Bruin would get on this day, and it scored in the 51st minute to tie the match.

But Whitney Ramsey tallied for the Pirates in the 71st minute, her second goal of the weekend, to give Whitworth the win. Thibodeau and Jael Hagerott were both credited with assists.

Whitworth keeper Krista Dietz did not have to make another save. She had none in the game as the Bruins only had the one shot by their own player on goal. The Pirates got off nine shots on goal against George Fox's Jessica Cardwell, who made six saves.

Coming Up: Whitworth will continue on the road next weekend with a match on Saturday at Pacific Lutheran, followed by a Sunday meeting with Puget Sound in a battle between nationally-ranked opponents.
