SPOKANE, Wash. - Kaylyn Plumb scored twice and Penelope Crowe posted three assists to lead Whitworth University to a 4-1 win over visiting George Fox University in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Plumb (Fr., D, Newman Lake, Wash.) scored the Pirates' first and fourth goals to increase her team-leading total to eight. Crowe (Jr., F, Bellingham, Wash.) tied a school record that is shared with five other players with her three assists, giving her eight for the year. Plumb headed in Crowe's corner kick in the 31st minute to give Whitworth (13-1 overall, 10-1 NWC) the early lead. Three minutes later, Kim Mitchell (Jr., D, Los Altos, Calif.) headed in an almost identical header from Crowe to make the score 2-0 heading into halftime. Kristen Cardwell pulled George Fox (9-5-1, 6-4-1) within a goal in the 58th minute when she dribbled around a defender and lofted a shot over Pirate keeper Krista Dietz (So., Enumclaw, Wash.). It was Cardwell's sixth goal of the season. But Greta Thibodeau (Sr., F, Juneau, Alaska) quickly rebuilt a two-goal advantage for the Pirates. As several Bruin defenders tried to clear a corner kick, Thibodeau took control of the ball and scored from the right side in the 62nd minute. Plumb's second goal of the match came in the 64th minute when she took a pass from Crowe and caught Bruin keeper Jessica Cardwell (Sr., Springfield, Ore.) out of position and fired just inside the right post. The Pirates, who strengthened their hold on second place in the NWC standings with the win over third place George Fox, outshot the Bruins 28-10 and had a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. The most recent Whitworth player to have three assists in a match was Mariessa Williams against Lewis & Clark College on October 9, 2005. Whitworth will host Willamette University on Sunday at noon, while George Fox travels to Whitman College for a match, also Sunday at noon.
