SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University broke open a close match with four second half goals enroute to a 5-1 win over visiting Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Friday afternoon.
Lindsay Oakes (So., MF, Boise, Idaho) scored twice for the Pirates (9-1 overall, 6-1 NWC), while Greta Thibodeau (Sr., F, Juneau, Alaska), Kara Tisthammer (Jr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) and Tori Crain (Jr., F, Spokane, Wash.) each tallied once. The Pioneers (1-7-1, 1-6) benefitted from an "own-goal" for their lone tally. Oakes gave Whitworth an early 1-0 lead when she intercepted a clear attempt just outside the box and fired back past L&C keeper Nora Germano in the 9th minute. But that would be the only score of the half for either team, despite the fact that Whitworth had a 17-1 edge in shots during the period, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. But Germano was up to the task in the first half, making six saves. Oakes scored Whitworth's second goal (and fourth of the year) early in the 56th minute when she scored off of a short cross from Jenny Krzymowski (Fr., F, Gallup, N.M.). Less than three minutes later Thibodeau scored her fourth goal of the season on a free kick from just outside the box. L&C got on the board in the 62nd minute when Lisa Housman drove hard down the left side of the field and sent a hard cross just in front of the goal. A Whitworth defender tried to clear the ball, but it spun the wrong way off of her foot and into the net. In the 66th minute Whitney Ramsey (Jr., F, Spokane, Wash.) carried in from the right end line and passed to a wide open Tisthammer, who finished for her fourth goal of the season. The Pirates' final goal of the match came in the 82nd minute when Danielle Fuller (Jr., D, Spokane, Wash.) sent a long free kick forward to Crain, who got behind the defense and scored past back-up keeper Karyne Sander. The Bucs finished with 23 shots, 13 on goal, while the Pioneers had four shots with three on goal. Whitworth keepers Krista Dietz and Leah Motz each had a save. Germano made eight saves for Lewis & Clark. Whitworth will host Whitman College on Saturday afternoon at Noon. L&C will play at Whitman on Sunday, also at Noon.
