Whitworth Season Ends in NCAA Second Round
Nov. 11, 2007

TACOMA, Wash. -- For the third time this season the University of Puget Sound handed Whitworth University a one-goal loss in women's soccer, and this time the loss ended the Pirates' season in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Crowe scored her third goal of the season

UPS (20-1-1) defeated Whitworth (18-3) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Loggers' East Athletic Field. Puget Sound will now go on to play Wartburg in the NCAA sectional semifinal next weekend.

Penelope Crowe put the Pirates on the board first when she took a pass from Jael Hagerott and lofted a long shot over UPS keeper Kallie Wolfer in the fourth minute. It was Crowe's third goal of the season.

Katie Gillette tied the match in the 13th minute when she headed in a corner kick from Janece Levien. Then in the 29th minute Adrienne Folsom took a short pass from Levien and scored from near the top of the box.

The Pirates tried to put pressure on in the second half, but could not ultimately penetrate the UPS defense. Kaylyn Plumb's headed with 10 minutes to play hit the cross bar in Whitworth's best chance at an equalizer.

The Loggers outshot the Pirates 23-13. Krista Dietz made nine saves for Whitworth while Wolfer made two stops for UPS.

Whitworth set a school record for wins in a season in 2007 and the team made its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament. The Pirates graduate three starters and five total seniors from this fall's squad.
