SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University defeated visiting Pacific University 2-0 in the Northwest Conference women's soccer opener for both schools at the Whitworth Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.

Emily Rohde (Fr., MF, Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Kelly Baker (Jr., D, Boise, Idaho) scored first half goals for the Pirates (4-0 overall, 1-0 NWC). The Boxers fell to 2-2-1, 0-1.

Rohde's goal came in the 12th minute when she chased down a long pass forward by Kaylyn Plumb (Fr., D, Newman, Lake, Wash.), beating her defender and Pacific keeper Sydney Vincent to the ball and scoring into the lower left corner.

Baker scored on a penalty kick in the 44th minute that was set up by Greta Thibodeau (Sr., F, Juneau, Alaska). Thibodeau took a free kick that Vincent got a hand on and forced into the cross bar. Thibodeau gathered the rebound and shot again from the left side of the box, drawing a foul from her defender. Baker converted the penalty kick to the lower right corner.

The Pirates outshot the Boxers 20-5, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. But Pacific did a better job limiting Whitworth's chances in the second half and keeping the score 2-0.

Vincent made six saves for the Boxers, while Whitworth keeper Krista Dietz (So., GK, Enumclaw, Wash.) made one stop.

Whitworth will host Linfield (1-2-1, 0-1) on Sunday, while Pacific travels to play Whitman (3-3, 1-0).
