SAN ANTONIO - Whitworth University rolled to a surprisingly easy 6-0 win over Texas Lutheran University in the season opener for both schools, played today at Trinity University. The match was called with 8:33 to play due to heavy rain and lightning.
The Pirates scored three goals in each half to defeat the Bulldogs, who tied a school record with 14 wins last season and returned 10 starters. Lindsey Oakes (So., MF, Boise, Idaho) scored the first goal of the season for the Pirates only 9:09 into the match. Kaylyn Plumb (Fr., D, Newman Lake, Wash.) made it 2-0 on a free kick at 23:37 and Erin Nakasone (Sr., MF, Mililani, Hawaii) made it 3-0 just under six minutes later. Greta Thibodeau (Sr., F, Juneau, Alaska) assisted on the first and third goals. Emily Rohde (Fr., MF, Lake Oswego, Ore.) scored a pair of second half goals within less than a minute of each other (56:49 and 57:45) to put the game out of reach. The first was unassisted (a put back of her own shot) and the second was assisted by Lydia Stewart (Fr., F, Battle Ground, Wash.). Kara Tisthammer (Jr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) completed the scoring at 60:04 off of assists from Penelope Crowe (Jr., F, Bellingham, Wash.) and Oakes. Whitworth outshot TLU 22-1, including a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal. Krista Dietz (So., GK, Enumclaw, Wash.) and Leah Motz (Sr., GK, Kent, Wash.) each played a half in net, and Motz made the Bucs' only save.
