SAN ANTONIO - Kaylyn Plumb scored with just over five minutes to play, lifting visiting Whitworth University to a 2-1 upset of 9th-ranked Trinity University in a non-conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
Plumb's (Fr., Newman Lake, Wash.) goal in the 85th minute capped a hard-fought match that was played heavily on the Pirates' end of the field. But Whitworth goalkeeper Krista Dietz (So., Enumclaw, Wash.) made eight saves to help the Pirates hold off the Tigers. Greta Thibodeau (Sr., Juneau, Alaska) gave Whitworth an early 1-0 lead when she scored off of an assist from Jael Hagerott (Sr., Spokane, Wash.) in the 19th minute. The lead remained 1-0 in favor of the Bucs until Jennifer Wray tied the match in the 52nd minute. Jordan Azar assisted on the goal. Trinity outshot the Pirates 19-6, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. But Dietz was up to the task on all but one of those attempts. Whitworth returns from its trip to Texas with a 2-0 record. The Pirates will put their perfect start on the line next Saturday when they host NCAA Division II St. Martin's at noon.
