SALEM, Ore. - Whitworth University set a record for wins to start a season as the visiting Pirates defeated Willamette University 2-1 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon at Sparks Field.
The Pirates (6-0 overall, 3-0 NWC) broke the previous record of 5-0 to start the season, set by the 1996 team and matched by the 2003 squad. Willamette fell to 1-4, 0-3. Whitney Ramsey scored her first goal of the season to get the Pirates on the board in the 10th minute. She tapped back a shot from Greta Thibodeau to put Whitworth ahead 1-0. Willamette tied the match leter in the first half when Alex Baxter scored from 15 yards out in the 34th minute off of a corner kick by Haley Rosenthal. Thibodeau scored the match-winner in the 73rd minute from five yards out, taking a crossing pass from Ellen Seagraves before beating Bearcat keeper Kelli Gano. Whitworth outshot Willamette 23-8, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. Krista Dietz made a pair of saves in goal for the Pirates.
