SPOKANE, Wash. - Jael Hagerott's goal in the 84th minute lifted Whitworth University to a 1-0 victory over visiting Willamette University in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
With the win the Pirates (14-1 overall, 11-1 NWC) moved back within a game of league-leading Puget Sound (14-0, 12-0) in the conference standings. The Bearcats fell to 4-8-2, 3-7-2. The game was decided by one goal despite the fact that Whitworth outshot Willamette 20-6, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Bearcat keeper Kelli Gano made seven saves, while Krista Dietz made a pair of saves for the Pirates. Whitney Ramsey passed to Emily Rhode, who flicked the ball on to Hagerott on the right side of the penalty box. Her shot back toward the left post found the net, her second goal of the season. Both Ramsey and Rhode were credited with assists on the play. Whitworth will host UPS next Saturday in a showdown that will help determine the final outcome of the Northwest Conference championship.
