SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University held off visiting Whitman College 2-1 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates (10-1 overall, 7-1 NWC) built a 2-0 halftime lead, but the Missionaries (3-5-2, 2-3-2) pulled within a goal 10 minutes into the second half and forced Whitworth to hold on for the win. Penelope Crowe (Jr., F, Bellingham, Wash.) put the Pirates on the board in the 12th minute when she put back a shot by Kara Tisthammer (Jr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) into the net. Lindsey Oakes (So., MF, Boise, Idaho) scored her fifth goal of the season and third of the weekend in the 43rd minute to give Whitworth a 2-0 lead. Greta Thibodeau (Sr., F, Juneau, Alaska) tallied her league-leading 9th assist on the play. Kendall Shibuya pulled Whitman to within 2-1 in the 56th minute after going hard up the right side and shooting off of the left post. But Whitman only had one shot at the Whitworth goal the rest of the way, but Kristen Berndt's attempt was high in the 86th minute. The Pirates outshot the Missionaries 19-7 and had a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Courtney Porter made eight saves for Whitman, while Krista Dietz (So., GK, Enumclaw, Wash.) had two stops for the Pirates.
