WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Lindsey Oakes scored once in each half to lead visiting Whitworth University to a 2-0 win at Whitman College in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday evening.
With the win the Pirates improve to 17-2 overall and 14-2 in the NWC. Whitworth has set s new school record for regular season victories in a season (beating the 1996 team that finished 16-5-2). The Missionaries (10-7-3, 9-5-2) finish tied for third in the final NWC standings with George Fox. Oakes (So., MF, Boise, Idaho) put the Pirates on the board in the 8th minute when she took a crossing pass from Penelope Crowe (Jr., F, Bellingham, Wash.) and scored into the top-right corner of the net. Oakes then scored the clincher, her team-leading ninth of the year, in the 65th minute from 12 yards away. Both Greta Thibodeau (Sr., F, Juneau, Alaska) and Jael Hagerott (Sr., MF, Spokane) were credited with assists. Thibodeau's assist is her conference-leading 11th of the year. Hagerott now ranks first in career assists at Whitworth with 27. In between Oakes' goals the Pirates had to withstand a strong scoring opportunity for Whitman. Kristen Berndt's point blank shot was kicked away at the last instant by the Pirate defense. Whitworth outshot Whitman 29-8, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Krista Dietz made two saves to post her fourth shutout of the season. Courtney Porter made six saves for the Missionaries. The Pirates, who finished second in the NWC and are currently ranked second in the NCAA West Region ratings, will await word on a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
