Oakes and Cosand Recognized for Work on Field and in Class
SPOKANE, Wash. - Miranda Cosand and Lindsey Oakes have been recognized by regional college sports information directors for their outstanding work on the soccer field and in the classroom. The pair have been voted onto the 2009 ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII College Division women's soccer team and First Team honorees. The Academic All-District VIII teams are selected from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA players throughout the western United States. The players are nominated and selected by members of CoSIDA. To be eligible for nomination, a player must be a starter or important reserve with a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and of sophomore standing. Cosand (Sr., D. Maple Valley, Wash. / Tahoma) is making her second straight appearance on the team. She is an english and writing major with a 3.96 grade point average. As an outside back on the Pirates' defensive line, she is second on the team in total minutes played and is a key reason that Whitworth has a 0.63 goals-against average. Oakes (Sr., MF, Boise, Idaho / Boise) is on the team for the first time. She is a psychology major with a 3.93 GPA. A highly honored player in the Northwest Conference over her four seasons, Oakes again leads the Pirates offensively in 2009 with five goals scored and five assists. Four of her goals have been match-winners for the Bucs, including last Sunday's goal in overtime at Pacific University that culminated a come-from-behind 3-2 victory. Whitworth is 14-3 overall and 11-2 in the Northwest Conference this season.
