Pirates Stake Claim for NCAA At-Large Bid
SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University defeated visiting Lewis & Clark College 1-0 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match to post the second highest victory total in school history and make a case for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The Pirates finish the regular season with a 17-3 overall record and a 14-2 mark in the NWC. The 17 wins ties the 2007 team for most regular-season wins in school history. That team went on to claim an 18th win during the NCAA tournament and the 2009 Pirates hope to have the same opportunity when the NCAA Division III tournament field is announced late Sunday night. Sidonia Davin scored the lone goal in the 25th minute, her sixth goal of the season. Kelly Lunde sent across a long pass from the right side that Stacy Hamer was able to head straight into the air. Davin was there to put the loose ball away. The Pirates outshot the Pioneers (3-12-5, 2-12-2) 17-4, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth also had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks as the ball spent the majority of its time in the defensive half for L&C. Krista Dietz made one save to post a shutout in her final regular season match for the Bucs. Dietz and fellow seniors Miranda Cosand, Shae Nakasone and Lindsey Oakes were recognized as Pirate seniors playing in the final regular season match of their careers.
