Joe Abraham - Head Coach
E-mail Coach Abraham at jabraham@whitworth.edu

Joe Abraham became Whitworth's fourth head softball coach in June of 2008. He will coach his first Pirate team in the spring of 2009.

Abraham comes to Whitworth from the Columbus, Ohio area, where he was the founder and head coach of the Buckeye Heat softball travel organization, the largest of its kind in the state of Ohio. He has also been the head coach at Thomas Worthington High School in Powell, Ohio.

Abraham, whose primary vocation was attorney-at-law in Powell, Ohio, is the first full time softball coach at Whitworth since the school added softball as a varsity sport in 1998. He takes over a team that finished 16-21 in 2008.

Abraham founded the Buckeye Heat organization in 1999 and it grew to include 10 teams and over 120 girls. During that time he coached his 18-U elite team to a record of 405-98 and has mentored dozens of players toward collegiate careers at every level. In addition, Abraham took over as head coach at Thomas Worthington in 2003, a team that had suffered through 13 losing seasons in the previous 15 years and had never won a league title in its 30 year history. But the squad won its first league title in his first season in 2003 and accumulated three league, and one district, championships in his five years as head coach. His overall record at Thomas Worthington was 83-46.

As the Director of Intramurals, Abraham has general oversight of Whitworth’s intramural facilities and equipment, and will work closely with the ASWU I.M. Coordinator to facilitate Whitworth’s active intramural program.

Halley Lentz - Assistant Coach
Email Coach Lentz at hcey08@whitworth.edu

Halley (Cey) Lentz will be an assistant coach for the Pirates in 2008-09, moving into the coaches box after starting for two seasons in center field at Whitworth. Lentz will be primarily responsible for the outfield, but will assist in all aspects of the program.

Lentz was a two-time first team All-Northwest Conference selection while playing for the Pirates. She finished her two seasons as Whitworth with a career average of .378. In 2008 she led the team in batting average (.407), runs scored (30), hits (50) and doubles (15 - a new school record). In addition to her hitting prowess, Lentz played stellar defense during her career. She did not make a single error in 79 chances (71 put outs, 8 assists) over her two seasons roaming center field.

Prior to her two years at Whitworth, Lentz was a two-year starter at St. Martin's University in Lacey, Washington.

She starred at Mead High School where she was the team captain and also the team MVP as a senior.

Bill Towey - Assistant Coach
Email Coach Towey at wtowey12@whitworth.edu

Bill Towey comes to Whitworth as an assistant coach after being the head coach for the Washington State University club softball team (2007-2008), where he guided the Cougars to two consecutive winning seasons. Towey, who will assist in all aspects of the Pirate softball program, has also coached select fastpitch softball teams in Spokane since 2002.

Towey played baseball at both the collegiate and semi-professional levels. Towey played baseball at University High School (1983-1985), where he was selected into the Titan Hall of Fame. He was an All-Greater Spokane League (GSL) player, owns a 1985 GSL batting title (.500), was selected as the team MVP as a senior.
