NEWBERG, Ore. - (From Blair Cash, GFU SID) Jo Sonnett threw a one-hitter in the first game and Jennifer Eckhoff followed with a two-hitter in the second game as the Whitworth College Pirates silenced the George Fox University Bruin bats twice, 11-0 and 10-1, in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field.

Sonnett (9-4) allowed only a 4th-inning single to left by Hollee Braun in the five-inning opener, the only runner she allowed, while striking out six. Eckhoff (3-3) was almost as effective in the five-inning nightcap, surrendering a lead-off single to Cassie Halvorson and an RBI single for an unearned run to Meaghan Barr in the 1st inning. She also walked one while striking out seven.

In the opener, Sarah Froman singled in Heather Case for the only run Sonnett would need in the top of the 1st, but the Pirates blew the game open with seven in the 3rd and added three more in the 4th. Kristin Hanson delivered the goods for the Pirates with a two-run single in the 3rd and a base-clearing triple in the 4th, while Sonnett also had a pair of singles.

Katie Plumb (0-2) started and took the loss for the Bruins, although only one of the eight runs she allowed and none of the three given up by reliever Michelle Roberts were earned due to five errors by the George Fox defense.

After spotting the Bruins a run in the nightcap, the Pirates rallied with three in the 3rd and eventually sealed the win with a six-run 5th. Amy Mattie reached on an error to start the 3rd, advanced to third on a double by Case, and scored the tying run on a single to center by Lindsay Davis. Hanson’s bunt single scored Case with the go-ahead run.

Hanson later doubled in a run in the 4th and slugged a three-run homer, her first of the season, in the 5th. She finished with a 3-4 game, as did Davis, who had two doubles and scored three times. Case and Sara Rylaarsdam also had two hits apiece in the Pirates’ 12-hit attack.

Roberts (1-10) suffered the setback for the Bruins, although only three of the runs off her were earned.

George Fox fell to 1-17 overall with its 15th straight loss and to 0-12 in the conference, while Whitworth improved to 12-8 overall and 7-3 in the league. The two will play another twinbill Sunday at 12 noon.
