Game 1: Whitworth 11, George Fox 2 (6 inn.) (Complete
box and play by play)
NEWBERG, Ore. - (From Blair Cash, GFU SID) After getting only three hits and one run off Whitworth College pitching the day before, the George Fox University Bruins improved with 10 hits and seven runs Sunday, but the Pirates continued to swing hot sticks and again swept the Bruins 11-2 and 11-5 in a rain-soaked Northwest Conference softball doubleheader at Morse Field. The first game went only six innings and was called by the eight-run ‘mercy rule’ in college softball. The second game was halted by the umpires in the top of the 6th inning with two out and three Pirates on base due to an increasingly-wet and treacherously-slick infield. In the opener, Jo Sonnett (10-4) went the distance, scattering five hits while striking out seven with no walks. She allowed a run in the 5th as Katie Plumb singled and scored on Jill Lacey’s double, and another in the 6th on a single by Kayla Winkler and an RBI double by Cassie Halvorson. Nikki Morrison (0-1), making her first start of the season on the mound for the Bruins, worked three innings and surrendered five hits and four runs to suffer the setback. The Pirates had a trio of three-run innings in the 3rd, 4th, and 6th to win going away. Jodi Schock, although she had only one hit, was the clutch batter for the Pirates. She drove in the first Whitworth run in the 1st inning with a sacrifice fly, grounded out on a bunt to score another in the 3rd, and drilled a two-run homer, her first of the season, to end the scoring in the 6th. Sarah Froman knocked in two with a ground out and a sacrifice fly, and Lindsay Davis scored four runs. Jennifer Eckhoff (4-3) threw a complete game for the Pirates in the nightcap, allowing only five hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Meaghan Barr and Winkler had two hits apiece for the Bruins, Barr with a double and Winkler with a double and a triple. Barr hit a two-run single in the 5th, and Winkler scored twice. Tristen Tamblyn (0-1) got the start on the hill for the Bruins in her third appearance of the season and allowed three runs in a third of an inning to take the loss. Michelle Roberts went the final 5 1/3. The Pirates banged out 12 hits, with Froman going 3-3 and Heather Case 3-5. Froman doubled and had two RBI. Kristin Hanson and Amy Mattie had two hits apiece, with Hanson hitting her second home run of the season and the series, a solo shot in the 5th. Davis and Hanson scored three runs each. George Fox is now 1-19 overall and 0-14 in the conference, while Whitworth is 14-8 overall and 9-3 in the league. The Bruins will be out to snap a 17-game losing streak when they host Willamette University Saturday for a 12 noon doubleheader. The Pirates host the University of Puget Sound Saturday, also a 12 noon twinbill. |
