Sonnett pitched a pair of 5-inning no-hitters

SPOKANE, Wash. - Jo Sonnett threw a pair of five-inning no hitters and Whitworth hit three home runs to sweep a Northwest Conference softball triple header against visiting Lewis & Clark on Friday afternoon at Marks Field. The Pirates won 10-0 (5 innings), 3-0, and 8-0 (5 innings).

The teams played three games on Friday to better the chances of completing the four game series. There will now be one game on Saturday, beginning at noon.

Sonnett won the first game with a no-hitter, limiting the Pioneers to two base runners on a walk and an error with six strikeouts. She then returned to pitch a five-inning perfect game in the third contest, facing the minimum 15 batters and striking out 11. In between, Whitworth's Jennifer Eckhoff pitched a complete-game, one-hitter. Eckhoff allowed only four baserunners, including two walks and one Pirate error. In 17 total innings, the Pirate pitchers limited L&C to one single.

Meanwhile, Whitworth used a big home run in each game to key the offense. Mandee Edwards hit a three run home run in an eight-run first inning in the opening contest. Kristin Hanson had a two-rbi single and Sara Rylaarsdam had an rbi hit to add to the inning. Rylaarsdam and Edwards then had back to back doubles in the second inning that each drove home a run.

Janet Freerks (0-8) went the distance to take the loss for L&C.

Sarah Froman hit her second home run of the season in the second inning of the second game to get the Bucs on the scoreboard. The Pirates added single runs in the fifth and sixth against Roxanne Rittmaster of L&C, who went the distance before falling to 1-7. Emily Strawn had the Pioneers' hit in the game.

In the final contest of the day, Whitworth led 3-0 in the third before Rylaarsdam hit her third home run of the season, a three run shot to center field, giving the Pirates a 6-0 lead. Hanson's double drove in the final two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Pirates eight runs. Chelsea Combs had a two-rbi single in the first.

Lindsay Davis went 4 for 8 in the three games with a pair of doubles. She scored four times. Edwards, Rylaarsdam, Froman and Hanson each had three hits. Rylaarsdam had five runs batted in, while Edwards and Hanson each had four.

Whitworth (21-8 overall, 16-3 NWC) continues to hold its lead in the Northwest Conference softball standings. Games today in Tacoma involving PLU (vs. Willamette) and UPS (vs. Pacific) were rained out. L&C fell to 4-26, 4-19.
