Chapman 4, Whitworth 3 (Complete box score and play by play) REDLANDS, Calif. - Top-seeded Chapman University rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to knock Whitworth College out of its first ever NCAA Division III softball regional. One half inning after the Pirates took a 3-2 lead, the Panthers scored twice to win 4-3. Whitworth ends its season with a record of 26-14. Chapman (28-9) continues on to play Linfield in another loser out game today. Lindsay Davis gave the Pirates an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run off of Chapman's Maggie Wilder in the bottom of the first inning. The Panthers rallied for single runs in the third and fourth against Whitworth starting pitcher Jo Sonnett. A pair of doubles led to the run in the third inning, while the run in the fourth was unearned after a throwing error from third to second base. After the first, Wilder limited the Pirates to one hit over the next four innings. But in the bottom of the sixth Heather Case drew a lead-off walk. Pinch runner Jennifer Eckhoff went to second on a single by Davis. A sacrifice attempt failed when it was popped up, but Sarah Froman followed with a long drive to left center that bounced off of the wall on a fly. But Eckhoff and Davis could only advance one base each because the left fielder looked like she might catch the ball. With the bases loaded Rachel Anderson singled to center field, scoring Eckhoff and Davis. Wilder managed to escape further damage with a strikeout and a pop up. Erin Dudzinski opened the seventh with a single over second base and was sacrificed to second base. After Jill Jeranko walked, she was forced at second base after a pop up to right center dropped in. With two out, Meredith Cipolla singled up the middle on an 0-2 count to tie the game. Kailee Roeser followed with another single to center field that scored the winning run. Stephanie Helbling singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and went to second on a sacrifice. But relief pitcher Marissa Becerra got Case and Davis to end the game. Sonnett took the loss for the Pirates and ends the season with a record of 19-8. Davis finished with two hits and two runs scored. Sonnett, Kristin Hanson and Chelsea Combs each played in her final game as a Pirate. |
