Game 1: NNU 4, Whitworth 2 (Complete
box and play by play) SPOKANE, Wash. - Lori Setbacken went 3 for 7, drove in three runs and scored two to lead visiting Northwest Nazarene University to a double header sweep of Whitworth in the softball season openers for both schools on Saturday afternoon in games played at Franklin Park. NNU jumped to a 4-0 lead off of Whitworth starter Jo Sonnett in the opener. The Crusaders scored three in the second, including a double by Setbacken that drove in two runs. Angela DuBois scored an unearned run in the third to complete the Crusaders' scoring. Amy Mattie tripled in the bottom of the fifth to drive home Kristin Hanson, then scored on a single by Heather Case to pull Whitworth within two. NNU escaped possible Pirate rallies in the sixth and seventh to preserve the win. Adrian Herman went to the distance, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out 11 and walking one. Whitworth's Sonnett allowed four runs, three earn, on 12 hits while striking out 12 and walking one. Case and Mandee Edwards each hit solo home runs in the second game for Whitworth, but NNU used a seven run fifth inning to beat the Bucs. A two-run triple by Jael Henthorne broke the game open for the Crusaders, who led 9-2 at the time. The Pirates rallied with thee runs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get the tying run to the plate. Trisha DeSimone went five innings and
allowed two runs on three hits to earn the win. Mackenzie Orth is credited
with the save for working the final two innings. Michelle Tully, who
came on in relief of Whitworth starter Jennifer Eckhoff, was credited
with the loss. |
