Game 2: Pacific 4, Whitworth 1 (Complete box and play by play)

Sonnett picked up two pitching victories

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth's Jo Sonnett concluded her dominating weekend of pitching by tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout in, while Pacific's Andrea Bansen gained a measure of redemption by earning a 4-1 victory in the nightcap of a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader at Marks Field.

The split evened both teams' records. Whitworth is now 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the NWC, while Pacific is 5-5 and 1-3.

Sonnett allowed only two singles to Pacific in the opener, and retired the final 15 batters in a row to lead Whitworth to a 6-0 victory. She struck out four boxers and walked none, earning her third victory of the weekend. She is 3-1 on the season.

Mandee Edwards drove in the game's first run with an RBI single in the first inning. Pacific's Caitlyn Chewning then held the Pirates scoreless until Whitworth scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sarah Froman had an RBI double, followed by two-rbi hits from Nikki Cavalier and Jodi Schock. Chewning took the loss to fall to 2-1 this year.

In the nightcap, Bansen was staked to a 4-0 lead and held on for a complete game 4-1 victory. She had led 3-0 on Saturday before the Pirates rallied to win 4-3, but it would not happen again. Bansen allowed only five hits and no walks, while striking out three Whitworth batters. She earned her first victory of the season and improved to 1-2.

Pacific scored two in the first when Kristen Croxford doubled home Shannon Janes and Trinity Smith in only the third at-bat of the game. The Boxers picked up an unearned run in the fourth and made it 4-0 in the fifth on an RBI single by Kelsey Herstad. Whitworth's only run came on a groundout by Amy Mattie that scored Stephanie Helbling in the bottom of the fifth.

Jennifer Eckhoff (0-1) worked 4.1 innings and picked up the loss in the pitching circle. Heather Case allowed only one hit in 2.2 innings of relief.

Whitworth hits the road next weekend at Pacific Lutheran University for a four game series. Pacific will host Lewis & Clark in a doubleheader on Saturday before traveling to George Fox for a Sunday twin bill.
