SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth College, coming off of its most successful softball season in school history, will welcome five college transfers to the team for the 2007 schedule. Four players from the Community Colleges of Spokane and one from St. Martin's University will join the Pirates this coming spring. Halley Cey (Jr., OF, Spokane, Wash. - Mead) is transferring from NCAA Division II St. Martin's University, where she started all 43 of the Saints' games as a sophomore and batted .244 with four doubles and 11 runs batted in. Amber Fowler (Jr., C/OF, Colville, Wash. - Colville) is one of four transfers from the CC of Spokane team that won the NWAACC Eastern Division with a 37-10 record. Fowler set Sasquatch records last spring by hitting 24 home runs and driving in 77 runs. She was named the team's MVP. Jessica LaPlante (Jr., P, Rathdrum, Idaho - Lakeland) set a CCS career record for strikeouts with 227. She was the captain of last spring's team. Lacey Parry (Jr., 1B, Spokane, Wash. - Mead) led the Sasquatch with a .449 batting average and was the Co-Defensive Player of the Year for the team. Morgan Thompson (Jr., 2B, Spokane, Wash. - West Valley) was second on the team with a .433 average and was the other Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Both Fowler and Parry were named 2006 NFCA First Team Community College All-Americans. The Pirates are coming off of a 2006 season in which the team finished 26-14 overall under first year head coach Fuzzy Buckenberger. Whitworth finished second in the Northwest Conference, only a game out of first place, and received an at-large bid to its first NCAA Division III tournament. |
