Froman had six hits in eight at bats at Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. - Whitworth split a softball doubleheader at a tough NAIA opponent on Saturday, taking the opening contest at Vanguard by a 7-6 score in eight innings before losing the nightcap 7-4 to the Lions.

Whitworth went 3-3 against a very tough schedule in California over spring break. The Pirates return with a 10-8 record ready to face the final five series in the Northwest Conference.

Sarah Froman had a huge day at the plate for the Pirates. She went 6 for 8 in the two ball games with three runs batted in, including the game-winning RBI in the opener. Heather Case had four hits and scored three times, while Stephanie Helbling added four hits and three runs scored.

Jo Sonnett improved to 8-4 in the circle with a complete game victory in the opening contest. She allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks, while striking out 11 batters.

Whitworth will continue on the road next weekend. The Pirates are schedule to play a four-game series at George Fox, with double headers on Saturday and Sunday scheduled to start at noon. George Fox is currently 1-15 overall and 0-10 in the NWC. The Bruins are scheduled to play five games in Hawaii this week during spring break.

The Pirates have won the last 13 meetings with George Fox and are 17-10 all-time against the Bruins.
