Six Whitworth Players Named All-NWC in Softball

SPOKANE, Wash. - Led by three-time all-conference honoree Heather Case, the Whitworth College softball team had six players selected to the 2007 All-Northwest Conference softball squad, which was released by the conference on Friday.

Case, a shortstop, was joined on the All-NWC First Team by catcher Lindsay Davis, outfielder Halley Cey and utility player Lacey Parry. Starting pitcher Jessie LaPlante was named to the second team, as was infielder/outfielder Lacey Kerr.

Case (Jr., Poulsbo, Wash. - North Kitsap) led Whitworth in batting average (.442), hits (50), runs scored (27), doubles (13) and runs batted in (31). The RBI total is a new school record, and the doubles total ties the school record. She is now a three-time First Team All-NWC selection.

Davis (Sr., Lake Forest, Calif. - Laguna Hills), the 2007 Whitworth team captain, was named to the First Team after earning All-NWC Second Team honors in 2006. Davis set a new school record for home runs in a season with seven and batted .378. She added 27 runs batted in and scored 27 runs.

Cey (Jr., Spokane, Wash. - Mead), a first year player for the Pirates after transferring from St. Martin's University, batted .355 this season. She also tied the school record for doubles in a season (13). The starting center fielder, Cey did not make a single error this season in 38 chances.

Parry (Jr., Spokane, Wash. - Mead), who transferred to Whitworth after two seasons playing for the Community Colleges of Spokane, was a First Team selection as a utility player after splitting the season between outfield and first base. Parry batted .343 with 27 runs batted in.

LaPlante (Jr., Rathdrum, Idaho - Lakeland) set a new Whitworth single season record for winning percentage (.900) while posting an 18-2 pitching record in 2007. Also a transfer from CC of Spokane, LaPlante struck out 91 batters in 132 innings.

Kerr (Fr., Spokane, Wash. - Mt. Spokane) started 29 of Whitworth's 36 games as a true freshman, mostly in the outfield but also at shortstop. She made the All-NWC Second Team as a utility player. Kerr batted .324 and scored 19 runs.

These six Pirates led Whitworth to a 30-6 mark in 2007, setting school records for overall wins (30), winning percentage (currently .833), NWC wins (25) and winning streak (16). The Bucs reached a national ranking of 8th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III poll.

Whitworth, now rated 14th in the latest NFCA poll, finished one game behind 2nd-ranked Linfield in the final NWC standings. The Pirates await a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The field will be announced on Sunday evening and the eight regional locations and participants will be announced on Monday morning.
