ORANGE, Calif. - Sixth-ranked Chapman University rallied for three runs in the second inning and five more in the third to roll past 19th-ranked Whitworth 8-2 in a non-conference softball contest at Hart Park on Sunday afternoon, a game that was officially part of the SunWest Tournament.
A previously scheduled game with Williams was cancelled. A Lindsay Davis home run gave Whitworth a 1-0 lead in the first inning. But the Panthers broke through against Whitworth starter Heather Case. A two-run double led to a three-run second inning. Then a two-out error at shortstop in the third inning led directly to five unearned runs for Chapman and an 8-1 deficit for the Pirates. While Jessie LaPlante came on to throw 3.1 innings of hitless relief, the Bucs could not come back against Panther pitcher Maggie Wilder. Halley Cey drove in Davis in the sixth inning with an RBI single for Whitworth's second run. After starting the season with 12 straight wins, the Pirates have dropped two in a row. Whitworth will conclude its Southern California swing on Monday with a double header at La Verne. |
