SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth College swimmers David Lillard and Katelyn Erickson have been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine At-large Academic All-District VIII College Division teams, based on voting by district sports information directors.
Lillard, a senior from Ellensburg, Washington, is a biology major with a 3.84 grade point average. He won the 100-yard Butterfly at the 2006 Northwest Conference Championships, to go along with a second place finish in the 100 Freestyle and third place in the 200 Individual Medley. He was also part of Whitworth's winning 400 Medley, 400 Freestyle and 800 Freestyle relays. Lillard served as a team captain in 2006, leading the Pirate men to their fourth straight Northwest Conference swimming title. Lillard was joined on the ten-member men's team by Pirate golfer Sean Thompson (see related release). Erickson, a sophomore from Austin, Texas, is a theology major with a 3.97 GPA. She was a 2006 Northwest Conference champion as part of Whitworth's 200 Medley, 400 Medley, and 800 Freestyle relays. The 800 Free relay broke an NWC record with a time of 7:53.05. She also tied for third in the 200 Backstroke and finished fourth in the 100 Breaststroke. She holds the Whitworth Aquatic Center record for the 200 Back (2:08.82), which she set as a freshman. The ESPN The Magazine Men's and Women's Academic All-District VIII At-Large College Division teams included ten individuals selected from sports without their own specific Academic All-District teams, including swimming, tennis, water polo, gymnastics, golf, wrestling and skiing. The individuals are nominated by their institutions' sports information directors and the 10 selections are made by a subsequent vote of district SIDs. District VIII in the college divisions comprises all non-NCAA Division I institutions west of the Rocky Mountains. This year marks the 55th year of the Academic All-America program. Over 15,000 students have been named Academic All-America team members at colleges and universities at all levels for every recognized NCAA sport.
