Kephart Takes 8th in 500 Freestyle

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Whitworth College's Samantha Kephart raced to an eighth place finish in the 500-yard Freestyle tonight on the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Kephart (So., Santa Maria, Calif. - St. Joseph HS) completed the evening final with a time of 5:01.47, the second fastest time in school history. She qualified for tonight's championship final with a preliminary time of 5:03.18, which was the eighth fastest in the morning heats.

The only faster swim by a Pirate in the 500 Free was Kephart's time of 5:01.17 set while winning the event at the Northwest Conference championships in February.

Brittany Gresset (Fr., Seattle, Wash. - Mt. Rainier HS) finished 33rd in the preliminary heats of the 50-yard Freestyle and did not advance to the evening finals.

The meet will continue on Friday as Kephart competes in the 100-yard Butterfly and Gresset swims in the 100-yard Backstroke.
