FEDERAL WAY , Wash. -- Whitworth's men continued to roll on toward their fourth straight Northwest Conference swimming title on Saturday night, opening a 128.5 point lead over Puget Sound after the second day of competition at the NWC Championships held at the Weyerheauser King County Aquatic Center. The Pirate women swept both relays and also got a record breaking individual victory to highlight their performance. Loren Killgore defended his title in the 400 yard Individual Medley to get the first victory of the night for the Whitworth men. His winning time of 4:03.18 is a strong NCAA provisional mark and just off of the automatic qualifying time of 4:01.18. Jason Hunter was fifth in 4:29.15. The Pirates went 1-2 in the men's 100 Butterfly. David Lillard won in a time of 52.17, followed by Josh McDowell in 52.85. Nathan Newberg was seventh in 54.35, giving the Pirates 49 points from the final heat. David Dolphay followed with a meet-record winning time of 1:42.87 in the 200 Freestyle, knocking off the record of 1:43.03 set by Linfield's James Adams in 1999. Tom Radke was fifth in 1:48.50. Bryan Clarke was unable to defend his title in the 100 Breaststroke, but he did post an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 58.78. Paul Hughes of UPS swam the fastest time in the history of the NWC in 56.35, breaking both the meet and conference records. The Pirates closed the night by winning the 800 Freestyle relay in a winning time of 7:04.23. Luke Stocker and Steve Garka finished second (54.46) and fourth (55.15), respectively, in the 100 Backstroke, behind winner Justin Lawton of Lewis & Clark (54.27). Whitworth was also second to UPS in the opening 200 Medley Relay, 135.57 - 1:36.72. Whitworth's women beat UPS in the 200 Medley Relay with a season-best time of 1:50.86. Samantha Kephart led a Pirate comeback in the event with a blistering butterfly leg. She then went on to break all of her own records while winning the 100 Butterfly in 56.23. She previously held the NWC (56.79) and meet (57.71) records in that event. Luan Ly added a third place finish for the Bucs in 59.60. Kephart then anchored the Pirates to an upset win in the 800 Freestyle relay, splitting a final leg of 1:51.04 to overcome a six second deficit to UPS after the third swimmer. Whitworth's winning time of 7:53.05 was a new meet record, breaking the old record of 7:55.01 set by UPS in 2001. Annie Grayson finished fifth in the 200 Freestyle (2:00.18), while Kate Erickson was fourth in the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.17). Brittany Gresset was also fourth in the 100 Backstroke (1:01.29). The Pirate women remain third in the meet standings, behind UPS and L&C. The meet concludes with the final day of competition on Sunday. Prelims begin at 10:00 am, followed by finals at 5:00 pm.
