Pirate Men Win Again; Whitworth Sweeps Individual Honors
February 12, 2006

FEDERAL WAY , Wash. -- Whitworth's men claimed their fourth consecutive Northwest Conference swimming title on Sunday night at the King County Aquatic Center, Steve Schadt was named NWC Coach of the Year and three Pirate swimmers shared NWC Outstanding swimmer honors in 2006.

Whitworth's men outdistanced Puget Sound 722 to 612.5. Linfield (414.5) was third. The Pirates claimed three more event championships on Sunday. David Dolphay led off the night with an overwhelming victory in the 1,650 Freestyle, touching in 16:04.84 and recording a very strong NCAA provisional qualifying time. His nearest competitor was over 35 seconds behind.

Loren Killgore followed with a victory in the 200 Backstroke, leading a 1-2 Pirate finish. Killgore touched in 1:55.09, while Luke Stocker was runner up in 1:58.58.

Several near misses followed before Whitworth closed the meet with a strong victory in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Nathan Newberg led off and David Lillard anchored, with Dolphay and Killgore in between. The Pirates' time of 3:10.50 was nearly four seconds ahead of Linfield (3:14.10).

Lillard and Steve Garka finished second (47.50) and fourth (48.02) in the 100 Freestyle, behind Kevin Caple (47.44) of Linfield. Bryan Clarke finished second (2:08.57) to Paul Hughes of UPS (2:06.97) in the 200 Breaststroke, but both were under the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Evan Shute won Pacific's first ever NWC title, taking the 200 Butterfly in 1:58.14, ahead of Whitworth's Jason Hunter, who was second (2:00.04) and Josh McDowell, who was fourth (2:02.56).

Schadt earned his first NWC Coach of the Year award in his third season leading the Pirates. Whitworth has won a championship every year he has been head coach.

Killgore and Dolphay shared the Men's Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet award. Each went undefeated in three races and each is going on to the NCAA Division III Championships.

On the women's side, Samantha Kephart continued perhaps the most dominating individual performance in the history of the NWC Championships. She won the 200 Butterfly in 2:01.45, shattering the previous meet record (2:06.69) and NWC record (2:04.12) she set last year. The previous NWC record time was good enough to finish second at last season's NCAA Division III championships. All three of Kephart's victories at the championships have been in Meet or NWC record time. She is the Women's Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet for the second year in a row.

In other women's results, Brittany Gresset finished second in a close 100 Freestyle to Amy Polansky of UPS (53.28 - 53.58). Katelyn Erickson finished third in the 200 Backstroke (2:10.65) to Nancy Alexander of Whitman (2:08.60). Lora Burge took ninth in the 200 Breaststroke (2:38.25) and Luan Ly was seventh in the 200 Butterfly (2:19.62).

Whitworth's 400 Freestyle Relay team finished third with a time of 3:41.23.

Puget Sound won its tenth consecutive women's title with a score of 719 points, followed by Lewis & Clark (528) and Whitworth (501). Matt Sellman of L&C was named NWC Women's Coach of the Year.
